Heather Hill Country Club Hosts Another AAGA Qualifier

Dispite the three pages of additional rules concerning Covid-19, a jam packed field of players battled in four separate qualifiers for their chance to play in next month's 60th anniversary City Open. Three waves began their rounds on three separate course layouts at 7am at the Heather Hill Country Club North-Middle, Middle-South and South-North courses. Twelve and ties from each of these waves qualified for the Open. The afternoon round was also conducted on the North-Middle course, but as a separate qualifier. Sixteen and ties made it into the Open in the afternoon play.

In all, 133 players competed for 52 spots in the AAGA Men's Championship which is planned for August 20th thru August 23rd. They will join 41 other players that are exempt from quliafying because they finished in the top 40 in the 2019 City Open.

Covid 19 put a real damper on the congenialty component of this year's qualifier. Spectators were not allowed on the course, meaning an entourage of family and friends following a loved one was completely eliminated.

Even caddies had to follow the strict MGA rules. The MGA had recenly softened its stance on caddies — allowing caddies only if they walked and practiced social distancing. Players were allowed to play without masks, but were required anytime, before or after play.

All in all, everyone embraced the rules, and everyone seemed genuinely happy that the AAGA could offer this first leg of the 2020 AAGA Mens Championship. This is one of the largest fields in recent memory (133), but is dwarfed by the "Tiger Era," numbers in which, on more than one occassion, more than 220 tried to qualify.

It was a long day with committee members arriving at 6am, and some not leaving until 6pm. But, all were grateful that we could get this done with dignity and grace.

Heather Hill North-Middle

Joe O'Malley was the medalist in the morning on the North-Middle course with a 73. David Carchedi and Dan Deyesso both had 74s. Thirteen players qualified for the City Open with scores of 78 or better.

Heather Hill Middle-South

Paul Kearns shot 68 to place him as low man on the Middle-South course. Ryan McElhinney shot 70 to take second place. Twelve players qualified for the City Open with scores of 78 or better.

Heather Hill South-North

Young Jake Gaskin shot 72 to lead the field on the South-North course. Chad Correia shot 74 to take second. Twelve players qualified for the City Open with scores of 79 or better.

Heather Hill North-Middle (Afternoon Pairings)

In the lone afternoon pairings, Bill Gaskin lead the field on the North-Middle course with a 72. Brendan Loomer and Patrick Chatfield were runnersup with 75s. Eighteen players qualified for the City Open with scores of 80 or better.
